La Dolce Vita (1960)
Directed by Federico Fellini, written by Federico Fellini

Capsule review by Matt Page:

Fellini's acclaimed masterpiece starts with a shot of Jesus leaving Rome, and goes on to explore the immorality of the upper echelons of Roman society, as seen through the eyes of Marcello, a newspaper gossip columnist. Marcello (played by Marcello Mastroianni) is drawn in by the allure of the life he sees around him, even though he knows the pointlessness of it all and the damage it causes.

Often seen as Fellini's response to Rosellini's Rome, Open City, the stunning black and white photography and the disorienting, surreal feeling he gives to the film makes beautiful, if challenging, viewing.
