Life of Brian
(1979)
Directed by Terry Jones, written by Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, and Graham Chapman
Capsule review by Matt Page: Monty Python's pseudo-biblical satire was much criticised on its initial
release for allegedly mocking Christ. However, as the dust has settled
over the years its become clear that it wasn't really about Jesus at
all, rather its real targets were biblical epics and most of all hypocritical
faith. Though many still find the closing scene in poor taste, the film
as a whole provides much needed balance to the epic genre whilst shining
a light into corners that its far too easy to ignore. If nothing else
the church should be grateful that Life of Brian was executed
so superbly that subsequent film makers have avoided making anything
that might be compared against it. Additional
